Chapped or dry lips can be unattractive and painful. Over exposure to sun, vitamin deficiency, harsh weather, licking your lips too much, smoking, allergic reaction or dehydration can lead to chapped lips. Some of the symptoms are dryness and redness, tender or sore lips, flaking and cracking.

Lips balms and over the counter medications can be helpful, but you can also make your own natural remedies at home. It will be cheaper and it will prevent chemicals exposure.

Natural Remedies for Dry or Chapped Lips

Honey

Honey which is raw and organic has a number of healing properties and it is an excellent remedy for cracked lips. Apart from having a soothing effect, it also has anti-bacterial properties, which prevent infections and help clean the lips.

The honey is also hygroscopic, that is, when exposed to air, it absorbs the moisture from the air in a natural way.

Use honey which is raw and organic and apply it on your lips a few times on a daily basis.

Water

One of the signs of dehydration is dry skin, and that includes dry lips as well. Drink a lot of water during the day and prevent dry lips. We tend to replace water with warm coffee during the colder months, but this is a mistake because coffee is diuretic which actually causes dry lips and dehydration.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a natural anti-inflammatory and also has calming properties which are helpful for dry and cracked skin. Like honey, Aloe Vera is also a hygroscopic, i.e. it absorbs moisture and keeps your lips smooth and hydrated.

You can use Aloe Vera as a gel or in a whole leaf form. Apply it to your lips using a Q-tip or your finger as many times you like during the day.

Coconut Oil

One of the number of uses of coconut oil is that it is an excellent skin moisturizer. Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties which are beneficial for dry lips. Apply some coconut oil on your lips whenever it is necessary. You can use other essential oils like sweet almond, jojoba oil or olive oil for similar results.

Jojoba oil is rich in vitamins B complex and E and some minerals. This oil is chemically similar to the natural oil of the skin, so it is perfect for skin care since it provides a simple and natural way of moisturizing the dry and cracked lips.

If you want to make your own natural lip balm, melt and then blend two teaspoons of each beeswax and jojoba oil on low heat. Put the mixture into a glass container and allow it to cool down.

Mango Butter, Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is a fat with a pale-yellow color which is extracted form a cocoa bean. It is a natural anti-oxidant, helps the healing of the skin and slows down aging as well.

Shea butter is extracted from the shea tree nut and it can moisturize and soften the skin. Mango butter is extracted from mango seeds and it is rich in omega-9, stearic and oleic fatty acids.

Having emollient properties, which protect the lips by supplying and keeping moisture, these natural butters can soothe and soften the skin and they can also heal cracked lips.

You need to melt 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and 2 of each of the natural butters and a tablespoon of beeswax over a kettle on low heat. Make sure to mix it well and then pour it in a glass container and allow it to cool.

Extra Tips

1.Stop licking your lips. Licking your dry lips can become a habit really easy. Avoid doing this since liking the lips makes them even drier.

2.Do not peel your lips. Do not peel the skin from your dry lips since it can lead to tearing or rips. Alternatively, gently wipe the dead skin with the help of a cotton ball previously soaked in warm water or with a soft brush.

3.Breathe through your nose. The breath on your lips may cause dry or cracked lips.

4.Apply some sunscreen. You can prevent drying of the lips from sun exposure if you apply some sunscreen. Do this in winter as well.
